With nearly four years of teaching experience in textiles, apparel, and fashion, Dr. Mamta Saharan holds the role of Assistant Professor of Fashion and Textile Technology at SUNY Buffalo State University in Buffalo, NY. Alongside her academic engagement, she also has a professional history with the luxury brand Liberal Lark®, located in London, UK.
Her upbringing primarily occurred in India, and she transitioned to the United States in 2018. A passion for international travel has led her to explore numerous national and international museums. Early in life, she recognized fashion as a language. This insight fueled her pursuit of this language, culminating in the attainment of a Ph.D. in Apparel and Textile Science with a specialization in Fashion Design from Punjab Agricultural University, Ludhiana (India) in 2018. Her academic journey was supported by a series of scholarships and awards, including a prestigious Gold medal from her university in recognition of her outstanding performance during her bachelor's degree.
Dr. Saharan boasts an array of publications in peer-reviewed journals and conferences. Her research focus encompasses a wide range of areas, such as historical costumes, smart textiles, consumer behavior, and the integration of emerging 2D and 3D technologies for sustainable product development within the dynamic fashion industry.
In her view, the fashion industry must confront the social, ethical, environmental, and economic dimensions of the world to ensure its lasting presence, all while diligently serving the objective of human satisfaction.
" Personally, art is a fantasy, and everyone wants to involve in this fantasy. In my artwork, I love experimenting with different traditional mediums such as watercolors, acrylic paints, and graphite pencils in conjunction with digital technology. One aspect of my work is childhood memories. My unique childhood has formed my character as I am intimately exposed to a multicultural environment. I accumulated knowledge through learning diverse languages, food, clothing, art, and craft. I always keep my sketchbook and DSLR camera with me and try to perceive at the macro level for small shapes, patterns, colors, and details that will fuel an inspiration."
